Surprise Canyon
Grand Canyon – Nature's Masterpiece

The Grand Canyon, located in Northern Arizona, is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, and it is a magical place to visit any time of the year. The South Rim of the canyon is open year-round, while the North Rim is open from late spring to early fall, as soon as the road into the park is cleared of snow. Visiting both rims will give you a grander picture of the canyon, because they are so unique and diverse.

The South Rim – This is the rim that gets the most visitors every year, and is the most built-up. There are numerous hotels, restaurants and gift shops on the South Rim, from the elegant El Tovar to the more modest Yavapai Lodge. In the summer, this rim can get very crowded, and it may be difficult to make reservations for rooms or dining.

The South Rim's elevation is about 7,000 feet, while the North Rim is about 8,000, so the vegetation, scenery, and number of people differs greatly on both rims. That's why you should try to visit both rims when you visit the Grand Canyon, because one rim just doesn't do your visit justice.

The North Rim – The North Rim is higher, smaller, and much different than the South Rim. There is only one lodge on the North Rim, with just a few restaurants and snack bars, along with campgrounds and hiking trails. The North Rim is a little harder to get to, which is another reason you won't find as many visitors there in the summer. It's much greener and lusher than the South Rim; too, so many people think it's the more scenic of the two destinations.

What to Do – Activities on both rims include excellent hiking, both into the canyon and along the rim, white water rafting, mule rides, bus tours, museums, and sightseeing. There are campgrounds and RV parks on both rims, too. Of course, you have to bring a camera to capture the magnificent gorge from all angles, and don't miss the nightly ranger fireside talks in the summer. It's a place the entire family will truly enjoy, so plan a visit to Grand Canyon National Park soon, and discover why it is such a magical place.
